coaching creative minds
Many people I coach appear to be broadly thinking, very often with a continuous flow of thoughts and ideas, and the wish to exchange thoughts. Some people find out during later in life that they are creative, something that they had never thought about. This is not about the artistic creativity, but about creativity as the ability to get to new insights and ideas based on the enormous amount of information that we get.
This open, broad and creative way of thinking is not limited to science, education and arts. And in the end it is the click that you feel with a coach, and the fact that the person and the way of working appeal to you, the most important thing for a successful coaching. I also coach many people outside of these groups.
So please don’t feel limited when you are appealed by my style of coaching and do not belong to one of the target groups mentioned.
Science
Many scientists went into science out of passion and interest. Later in your career you may get split; between applied research and unraveling the fundamentals, between publishing in well-known journals or reaching more impact along other channels, between research or teaching. At these moments, a sparring partner is very welcome; independent, with an open mind and knowing the system. I worked for years as an immunological researcher at Sanquin. Later on I worked as a teacher, a program director and strategic policy advisor at the University of Twente. This made me see the various parts of the scientific world. While coaching scientists now, this is very welcome.
Education
Most people choose to work in education out of mere passion for the job; being in contact with other people, enabled to see students for who they really are, learning, and facilitating people growing.
Later in your career it appears not as easy as you want to really do this. A sounding board may help, to refind your own energy, and focus your career.
I worked myself as a teacher and program director, as a teamleader and strategic policy advisor on education. My experiences enable me to know that content, and to understand your needs as a teacher.
Arts
Very often the thinking processes are similar, leading to a different product. Creativity in science and in arts involves intuition and integration of novel concepts. The major difference is that the creative ideas in science need to be validated, while in arts they need to be unique.
The added value that I can offer creative scientists, is similar to the added value for artists. My interest in and experience with creativity in broader perspective, increases their mutual added value. Comparable questions, with a different route of entry or way of working, a different balance between ratio and intuition.
My own creative mind, broad and open thinking, years of experience as an amateur musician, and my love for (abstract) art made me capacitate myself in coaching people in arts.
